OUR #5: Sheep
OUR #5: Sheep

OUR #5: Sheep

28 July 2014

So here we are. Our final stage at The Next Big 5. Our last "Tales about everyday animals”. (Before we start taking this project to the next step, that is)

There are billions of everyday animals. But most of us haven’t seen all of them in real live yet: the everyday sheep, cows, chickens, pigs and salmon.

They aren’t the Big 5. Nor are they the European Big 5. I believe they are The Next Big 5. They should be for sure. This project is all about tales of everyday animals. Animals we never see but live among us, in numbers we even can’t imagine.

This is a showcase of heroes, The Next Big 5 heroes. And alongside them, many other animals that match them.

Our last animal are the sheep. Probably, this one of the animals we still meet from time to time. But did you know there are over one billion of them world wide, most of them in Asia and Australia. There are a couple of reasons, next to their number, why we selected them as one of our Next Big 5 heroes. Guarding sheep doesn’t come without risks: there are plenty of diseases (which are the base of why sheeps tails are cut) and predators are everywhere. Unfortunately this also leads to brutal killing of the predators.
You can participate in this tale. Send us your stories, post them to facebook or tweet to us. We’re happy to share them.

It’s important to note that we don’t criticize the attention for nor the protection of the well know Big 5 (lions, African elephants, Cape buffaloes, leopards and rhinoceros). That would be absurd, because even the animals we know as the heroes of nature are under enormous threat. We respect them as much as we respect The Next Big 5.
