Eating Animals

02 May 2013

Two weeks ago I bought Eating Animals, Jonathan Safran Foer's book on his years oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian and who’s casual questioning took an urgency on the brink of fatherhood. The research for his book required him to visit "factory farms" in the US and probe some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong.

Last night, I started to read and - way up in the night - I finished the book. Understanding the journey of Jonathan's diet (from veggie to meat and back), shocked by the literal description of the way factory ...

19 September 2012

In February 2010, Tom Greenall and Jordan Hodgson were commissioned by the writer and philosopher Alain de Botton to collaborate on a new book entitled ‘Religion for Atheists: A Non-believers Guide to the Uses of Religion’.

Their designs included a "Temple to Perspective": Standing 46-metres tall and in the heart of the City of London, the Temple represents the entire history of life on Earth. Each centimetre of its height equates to one million years of life, with a ...

16 August 2012

Having a look inside at the creatives houses, that's what Todd Sellby is doing sinds 2008 with The Selby , in a way that internationally boosted him. Strong photography, combined with the nicest houses and most creative people. In 2010 that resulted in a book, which of course, we very quickly bought.

It's not only 'hot' to take pictures of the interiors, but as well to show what everybody wants to know: which books are you reading, what does the wardrobe look like, which are the smell items on the side table, ...

Hotel Básico

30 May 2012

Back To Basics, Hotel Básico is ideally situated in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, only a few steps away from the ocean. It has a architectural/interior mix of Mexican influences and industrial, cosmopolitan, details like exposed plumbing. In the top floor's "Azotea Bar" two petroleum tanks act as pools (imagine the view of the Caribbean).

It's how a design hotel should be.

Fabrica is an Italian communication and research centre, established in 1994 and financed by the Benneton Group.

Not a PR- or communication office, neither a school or academy, but a lab, creating the possibility for (worldwide) young creatives to collaborate, brainstorm (with open sources and networks) on communication, interaction, video, music, photography, … They’re guided by some strong art directors and experts.

I clearly remember Fabrica from some years back. They introduced ...

Those heroes. Everyone has at least a few. The ones who know me, know mine is Paul Smith. Because I believe his story. And because he and his team make fantastic things. And because I’m a man, and he – happy me – focuses on men.

Leaving school at age 15, he’s not the academic fashion designer (‘designer’ being a word he wanted to associate with only a late stage of his career – a remarkable fact about his brand as such). Yesterday I saw

We blijven nog even in Stockholm hangen.

Transcience, a collection of David Derksen & Lex Pott, shows the beauty of the natural oxidizing process of mirrors.

By accelerating and manipulating this process, the Transcience mirrors show various stages of oxidation in three different geometrical patterns.

"... Normally, the oxidation process in a mirror occurs randomly and evolves slowly over time. In this case, sulphur is used to create an accelerated oxidation process. ..."

Who needs people when you've got the floor? For this project I picked some personal items from our house: some old, some fresh but all meaningful to me.

The 3 items I like the most:

/ I love the hand-wover scarf by Ilse Acke. Each of her designs is unique. I'm proud she designed a limited edition T-shirt and two hand-woven brooches for my current collection.

/ I also incorporated a leather toiletry bag that I got from my aunt. It's one of the many itmes I inherited from her when she passed away.

It's likely you've seen Anna Garfoths artwork in a magazine's hotlist lately, if not: Anna is a graphic designer that inspires me and this is why:

Anna uses her background in graphic design, illustrator and typography into 'green lettering' using moss; 'edible posters' using cookie dough, and 'typographic trash' using what she finds in her bin.

Her artwork is smart and accessible, and has been used for public events and community projects. Can't wait to see her work popping up in the Belgian streets!
